(written during my author table slot at Chipping Norton Literary Festival – come to our FREE fringe event tonight to hear it)
boards of favourite words
listening to snippets overheard
a turn of phrase
discreet pieces of praise
reminiscences of better days
jabbering
yammering voices
stammering to make the choice
to express the fears
they kept repressed
till faces fall depressed
the thought remains suppressed
beneath the weight of too many years
and they return
to press their pillows with their tears.
